Teeth whitening: my experience and what you need to know

People compliment my teeth all the time. When I tell them that the only thing I’ve done to change their appearance is a bit of whitening, they’re often surprised. Some can hardly believe it.

For me, a little whitening has made a difference that people notice. They’re still my own teeth, with their own shape and character, just a little brighter.

If you already like the shape of your teeth and mainly want to change the colour, whitening could be worth exploring. It can lighten natural teeth without removing tooth structure. I’d want to understand what you’re hoping for and whether whitening could help you achieve it. [2]

Here’s what I’d want you to know before starting, including why we use Boutique Whitening and the practical details I’d talk through with you.

First, I’ll check whether whitening is right for you

Before we start, I’ll check your teeth and gums and ask about sensitivity and any previous dental work. Decay, gum problems or unexplained symptoms may need attention first. We’ll look at your starting shade and talk about the change you’d like to see. [1] [3]

In the UK, whitening is a dental treatment that should follow an assessment and prescription by a registered dentist. Cosmetic whitening is for adults aged 18 and over, and is usually postponed during pregnancy or breastfeeding. [1] [3]

Why I like Boutique Whitening

We use Boutique Whitening, a professional system that lets you whiten at home with a routine we plan together. The prescribed gel goes into trays made to fit your teeth. I’ll check the fit and show you how much gel to use and how to wear them. [1]

One practical advantage is the choice of day and night formulations. Boutique by Day is designed for around 90 minutes of daily wear, while the night options are designed for longer wear, often overnight. The exact gel and wear time should follow your individual instructions. [4]

That choice is one of the reasons I like it. The routine needs to fit into your day and feel manageable. We’ll discuss what works for you, taking any sensitivity into account, and choose the prescribed routine accordingly. [4]

For each course, the first use must be carried out by a dentist, or under their direct supervision, before you continue at home. [3]

I’ll explain the plan so you feel comfortable using the trays. If you’re unsure about anything once you get home, I want you to feel able to ask.

How white will your teeth become?

Whitening is gradual and usually takes a few weeks. Your starting shade, the type of discolouration and how consistently you follow the prescribed routine all influence the result. I’ll talk you through what we can realistically expect for your teeth. [1] [4]

For my own teeth, a bit of whitening has been enough for people to notice. When we discuss yours, I’d want to know what you would feel happy with. You might want a subtle lift or a brighter result; we can talk about what is achievable.

Existing crowns, veneers, tooth-coloured fillings and composite bonding will not lighten in the same way as natural teeth. This can create a colour mismatch, which we should discuss before starting. If you are considering bonding as well, we can plan the sequence and shade together. [1] [2]

What if your teeth are sensitive?

Temporary tooth sensitivity and gum irritation can happen with whitening. If your teeth are already sensitive, tell me before we start. If treatment becomes uncomfortable, pause and contact the practice for advice. I’d want to hear about it so we can review your plan. [1] [2]

We can review the tray fit, the amount of gel and the prescribed routine. Using the amount you have been shown helps limit excess gel spilling onto the gums. [2] [4]

How long will it last?

Whitening is not permanent. The colour can gradually change again, and habits such as smoking or regularly drinking tea, coffee or red wine can affect maintenance. [1]

Keep your trays. If you want to whiten again later, we can check whether they still fit and whether further whitening is appropriate. I’ll talk you through any future gel or maintenance costs when needed. [1] [4]
